Day 1 - Saturday          

Arrival in Lisbon and transfer at 17:30 pm from the meeting point at arrivals in Lisbon International Airport. You will travel South, for approximately 120km, to  your accommodation  in a rural comfortable house, called Uva do Monte/Serenada located in Grândola, 1,5km from the sea. Uva do Monte/Serenada is a very pleasant and charming rural house, with pleasant staff and equipped with the comfort of a modern hotel. Here you will find a relaxed atmosphere where you can swim in the pool or rest in the comfortable rooms before your first day on horseback. Dinner at the hotel, so you can relax and rest.After dinner you will enjoy your first night in Portugal.

Day 2 - Sunday

Today we take you by car to Passeios a Cavalo Melides, where the horses are stabled. We will start from here to go through the hills of Grandola where we will enjoy beautiful cork trees landscape. After the first few canters, you will notice that the horses have wonderful character and their sure footedness. For lunch, a delicious picnic prepared with typical Portuguese food, accompanied by fresh bread and good wine. You will rest for a wild after lunch, and we will ride back through the forests of centenary cork trees. You reach Coudelaria Quinta do Almargem where we will stable the horses. A short transfer of 10 min by car takes you back to your hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada, where you can refresh and prepare for dinner at Fadista Restaurant in Melides.

Day 3 - Monday      

Today you will traverse forests of eucalyptus, cork and wild trees enjoying their distinctive perfume and ear the sound of the bark crunching underneath the horses’ hooves. We will stop for lunch at one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the area where is a old ruin church. After picnic we can have a relaxing siesta. Afterwards we have the opportunity for some fast canters on the sandy trails that cross this part of the Portuguese countryside. Dinner at Quinta do Lourenço and overnight at our hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada.

Day 4 - Tuesday

Today we will ride from Uva do Monte/Serenada to the beach. It’s a beautiful ride at first light as the sun rises over the dunes. There is the possibility of a beach canter before reaching a lovely picnic spot in the pine forest where your horses rest while you may swim in the sea. After lunch at Melides our Santo André Lagoon we will ride through the dunes, and reach the beach stables where the horses will rest. After riding a short transfer to the hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada. 

Day 5 - Wednesday      

Rest day at Uva do Monte/Serenada our Nômade.

After Breakfast you will pack your bags and around 12pm, we will do a small transfer to the new hotel where you will rest and sleep. Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada  is a small countryside resort were you can walk along the pine trees, ride a bike or just relax in the biological pool. Dinner and rest in the hotel. Tourist visits can be organised at your request to the old village of Alcácer do Sal visiting one of the oldest handmade saddleries in Portugal.

Day 6 - Thursday           

Today we will ride from Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada to the beach of Comporta  area through the pine forest and vineyards fields. It’s a beautiful ride at first light as the sun rises over the dunes. There is the possibility of a beach canter before reaching a lovely picnic spot in the forest area where your horses rest while you may swim in the two natural lagoons.  After lunch we ride through the forest to the vineyards of Brejinho da Costa winery. Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada, were we stay overnight. Dinner will be at a local restaurant.

Day 7 - Friday          

Today we ride from Brejinho da Costa winery to the Sado River. Many opportunities for faster riding occur today. Our horses will carry us safely through rive fields. Sandy paths will be find where we can ride with the sound of the sea closer to us. On our return, we can enjoy a nice refreshing swim before arriving in Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada.  Farewell dinner and overnight in Nômade/Pinhal da Coutada.

Day 8 - Saturday

After breakfast, transfer back to Lisbon International Airport and departure.

Arrival by Plane

            Portugal’s main International airport is Lisbon’s Portela Airport. Passeios a Cavalo Melides clients need to arrive at this airport in order to complete the transfer of the group to the first hotel of their ride.

            The “Meeting Point” in Lisbon’s airport is located to the right after leaving the luggage collection area. You will be welcomed there by a representative of Passeios a Cavalo Melides who will drive you to your hotel.

Arrival by car

            If you choose to travel by car you can joint us at Lisbon’s Portela Airport, or we can pick you up at the main door of the Church of Melides.

Other Information

Transfer/Arrival: On Saturday at 17:30 from Lisbon’s airport.

Departure: On Saturday at 10:30 to Lisbon’s airport.

Program: Guided riding tour.

Guide: English and French speaking.

Horses: Good natured, sure footed Portuguese Lusitanos trained for trails, using very comfortable sheepskin Portuguese military saddles.

Level & Experience: Intermediate. When booking, please provide us with information about your riding skills and experience to help us to establish your ability for the holiday.

Pace: Moderate with trotting and medium to long canters. Some gallops.

Maximum weight: 85kg (188lbs).

Minimum number: 4 Maximum: 10 (extra supplement for 2)

Lodging: Good hotels, pousadas, country houses, and private estates.

Rooms: Double and Single rooms are available.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are included*

Special requests: Need to be advised in advance, eg. vegetarians

Own horse: Not allowed

Safety when riding: We recommend for your own safety that you wear a hard hat that meets current safety standards. It is important that your hat fits properly and that you feel comfortable and secure with it. Whilst riding or in the vicinity of horses, you must comply with the instructions of your guide. It is a condition of your booking that you accept the guide`s authority to require you to dismount or to refuse you to ride if for any reason he considers that you may endanger your safety, the safety or welfare of the horses or any other person.

There is an inherent risk involved in horse riding and even the best trained horse can put a foot in a hole or be startled by an animal out of the bushes. You may fall and get injured. Therefore you are requested to sign an acknowledgement of the risks associated with riding and acceptance of personal liability. If you are not allowed to ride because you refuse to sign this disclaimer or if you refuse to use a hard hat you will have no claim against us. 

Payment: A deposit of 30% is required at the time of booking and payment in full 15 days beforehand. All travel arrangements will be sent with the confirmation of your booking.

Tipping: Tipping guides or other staff is at your discretion and appreciated. Please remember they are responsible for your safety and work hard to ensure you have an enjoyable holiday while in Portugal.

Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is obligatory for all clients and you must confirm with us in writing that you are covered for the riding activities to be undertaken. You have to have to arrange your own insurance with full protection for the duration of your holidays in respect to all health and life requirements.

Day 2 - Friday

            Today we start with a short drive to the stables at Passeios a Cavalo Melides, where the horses are. We start the ride from here through the hills of Grândola you will enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the sea. After the first few canters, you will notice that the horses are sure footed and have a wonderful character. Lunch will be a delicious picnic prepared with grilled meats and salad accompanied by fresh bread and of course great Portuguese wine! After a rest we will ride back through the forest to Coudelaria Quinta do Almargem where we will stable the horses. A short transfer of 10 mins will have you back at your hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada, where you can refresh, have a swim in the pool and prepare for dinner, this evening we will be going to Fadista Restaurant in Melides.

Day 3 - Saturday

            Today you will ride through Eucalyptus forests, enjoying their distinctive perfume and hear the bark crunching underneath the horses’ hooves.

Lunch will be at the Lagoon of Santo André where we can eat the grilled specialities of the house (fresh fish or meat). Afterwards we have the opportunity for some fast canters on the sandy trails that cross this part of the Portuguese countryside.

Dinner and overnight at your hotel, Uva do Monte/Serenada.

Day 4 - Sunday

            Today we ride from Uva do Monte/Serenada to the village of Melides. Today there will be more opportunities for faster riding through the pine forests on red earth paths alternating with those of sand, we may meet herds of cattle or sheep. Lunch will be at a local restaurant in Melides. We will end our wonderful tour on this typical Alentejo town, Melides, where we will have lunch. After lunch, transfer to Lisbon International Airport and departure.

Information About Travelling to Portugal

Documentation: To enter and exit Portugal you need a passport (non-EC) or a valid identity card.

Climate:

            Spring:  Temperature ranges between 12° and 20° C with many sunny days.

            Summer: Temperature ranges between 24° and 30° C with many hot, sunny days.

            Autumn: Temperature ranges between 17° and 22° C, with many sunny days. Possibility of rain.

Vaccinations: No vaccinations are necessary.

Currency: The local currency is the EURO.

Service Hours:

            - Banks:  08:30am – 3:00pm.

            - General stores:  9:00am – 7:00pm. (Sometimes they close later)

Electricity: 220 Volt

Cameras, Film and Batteries:

Outside big towns, film and batteries can sometimes be difficult to find. We advise to bring all you need or buy in the airport before the transfer.

*Water and wine are included at lunch. Drinks with the exception of water and juices are not included at dinner.
*Any requirements for transportation outside this transfer time can be arranged at an additional cost.
